Winter Reading Guide

winter reading guide
Hello rosebuds!๐Ÿ’

As most of you know, each season I like to share a few of my recommended reads for that specific time of year. Although winter has been here for quite a bit already, we still have until March 20th when the season is officially over.

So, what do I look for when recommending winter reads? Hereโ€™s a breakdown:

  1. Classics
  2. Historical Fiction books
  3. Fantasy books
  4. Fairy tales or retellings
  5. Anything with a winter setting
  6. Anything with cozy vibes

I am splitting this post up into two sections. The first being the winter books I have already read and would recommend, the second being the winter books I have not read but would like to get to this season.

Now, enough babbling. Let us begin!

WINTER BOOKS Iโ€™VE READ

Whichwood (Furthermore, #2)
1. Whichwood

by: Tahereh Mafi
why read this in winter:
Whichwoodย is a middle grade fantasy book and the companion novel toย Furthermore. Inย Whichwoodย we follow a girl named Laylee who is fated to wash the bodies of the dead and prepare them for the afterlife. She is stuck in a loneliness right after the death of her mother and is basically just going through the motions when one day two familiar faces appear and change everything. Although this story is set in the same world, as Furthermore, you could totally treat this narrative as a standalone.

I’m mainly recommending Whichwood for two reasons. 1.) The town of Whichwood where the story takes place is known for it’s winter weather with temperatures below freezing. 2.) This narrative just so happens to fall into the fantasy category–a genre I love reading when it’s cold out. Other than those two main factors, there are still many reasons why one should pick this book up during the winter time. What it really comes down to though, is the fact thatย Whichwood totally gives off those cozy winter vibes. This is a story you will definitely want to enjoy while snuggled up in your blanket and sipping a big cup of hot cocoa.

Little House in the Big Woods
2. Little House in the Big Woods

by: Laura Ingalls Wilder
why read this in winter:
Little House in the Big Woodsย is book one in the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I think perhaps the most famous book in this series is Little House on the Prairie. The story follows a young Laura and her family as they go through Pioneer Life in a log cabin in Wisconsin. The series as a whole is based off the real life adventures of the author.

Although Little House in the Big Woods takes place throughout the course of several seasons, a huge majority of the story follows the characters as they prepare for the long winter by hunting and saving food. We also get to experience a chapter that involves a lovely Christmas celebration between Laura’s immediate and extended family members.

Even though nothing really exciting happens within the plot, something about Wilder’s writing will just pull you in. Not only is the narrative easy to read, but the book itself is super short (think 224 pages) making it the perfect tale to pickup during a day when you are all snowed in.

Snow & Rose
3. Snow & Rose

by: Emily Winfield Martin
why read this in winter:
Snow and Roseย is a Middle Grade retelling of the Snow White and Rose Red fairy tale. The story follows sisters Snow and Rose after their father disappears in the woods and their mother falls into a deep sorrow. The enchanted woods is under a set of terrible spells, and it is up to Snow and Rose to break them.

Snow and Rose is a perfectly atmospheric story set in a wintry landscape. Martin does an amazing job at giving the reader lush descriptions of the sisterโ€™s surroundings, and let’s not forget to mention her beautiful illustrations that totally add to that frosty mood. Either way, you can’t really go wrong by reading a fairy tale retelling in the winter.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
4. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

by: C.S. Lewis
why read this in winter:
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobeย is a childrenโ€™s classic that follows three siblings as they stumble through a wardrobe and discover the land of Narnia. There are mythical beings, a talking lion and magic galore.

If there ever was a perfect book to read during the winter season, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe would be it. Not only does this story tick off the boxes for being both in the classic and fantasy genres, but the entire tale is set in Narnia–a place where it is ‘always winter, but never Christmas’. The setting of this story could not be more perfect for the freezing weather. I mean, the villain is a snow queen who put Narnia under a curse where it is permanently winter time. You can’t get more wintry than that!

Heartless
5. Heartless

by: Marissa Meyer
why read this in winter:
Heartlessย is basically a prequel toย Lewis Carrollโ€™s classic tale,ย Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. In this retelling, weย follow the Queen of Hearts and the events that lead up to her becoming the ruthless, violent villain we know today. Before she was evil, she was just Catherine–a sweet girl who loved to bake. Considering the fact that we all know how the Queen of Hearts turns out, pretty much anyone will be able to guess that this is a terribly tragic tale with a not so happy ending.

The main reason I am recommending Heartless to read during the winter is because I personally find retellings of fairy tales and classics to be extremely cozy–especially when they have fantasy elements as well.

Red Queen (Red Queen, #1)
6. Red Queen

by: Victoria Aveyard
why read this in winter:
Red Queen is a YA fantasy that is about a world where there are two kinds of peopleโ€”those with red blood, and those with silver. The red bloods are what you and I areโ€”regular humans, with nothing special about them. On the other hand, the silver bloods are like gods brought down to earth. They each have unique powers and abilities. The main character Mare, deemed a red blood at birth discovers she has a somewhat deadly ability.

People either love or hate Red Queen. I am one of those individuals who totally adore it. Even though this is a fantasy (a genre I will always recommend for the winter season) there is just something else about this story that makes me think of the frigid weather. Maybe it’s the fact that the villains literally manage to chill me to the bones, or it might even be the eerie world/setting. Either way, Red Queen would make a perfect book to pick up this season.

The Snow Queen
6. The Snow Queen

by: Hans Christian Andersen
why read this in winter:
The Snow Queenย is a classic fairy tale that follows a young girl named Gerda, and her journey to save her friend Kay who isย lured from his home by the evil Snow Queen. As Gerda searches for her companion, she meets an array of characters who each help her out in one way or another.

The Snow Queen is the ultimate book to read during this season, as it is set with the backdrop of winter. There’s also tons of snow and an ice palace too. You simply can’t go wrong by choosing to pick up The Snow Queen this season.

WINTER BOOKS I WANT TO READ

Murder on the Orient Express (Hercule Poirot, #10)
1.ย Murder on the Orient Express
by: Agatha Christie
why read this in winter:
Murder on the Orient Express is a classic mystery novel by author Agatha Christie. The story takes place aboard a luxurious train known as the Orient Express. When an avalanche stops the train dead in it’s tracks, a murder is discovered with thirteen possible suspects. It is up to the world’s greatest detective, Hercule Poirot to uncover the truth.

I don’t know about you, but to me there is just something about reading a mystery that makes me want to curl up in a warm blanket–especially when it’s cold out. I picked this specific murder mystery for this list, because 1) it falls into both the classic and mystery genres, and 2) it also takes place during the winter season. Not only are the characters trapped in a secluded location, but they also have nowhere to escape to considering the train is surrounded by an avalanche. I mean, you just can’t get more wintry than that.

The Dollmaker of Krakow
2.ย The Dollmaker of Krakow

by: R.M. Romero
why read this in winter:
The Dollmaker of Krakowย is a middle grade historical fiction novel that takes place during the second world war. In it, we follow a living doll named Karolina who is spirited away from the land of dolls and into the hands of a dollmaker in Krakow, Poland. Karolina is brought to life right before the dollmakerโ€™s eyes, and before he even knows it he is smiling and laughingโ€“something the dollmaker never doesโ€“all at the same time.

Unforunately, this newfound happiness is quickly dashed when the Nazi soldiers begin to invade Poland. Karolina and the dollmaker soon realize that their Jewish friends are in serious danger and decide they must help save them no matter what happens.

This would make a great winter read not only because it is a historical fiction novel with fantasy elements, but it also takes place in Poland with a cold, wintry backdrop.

Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1)
3. Six of Crows

by: Leigh Bardugo
why read this in winter:
Six of Crows is a young adult fantasy novel set in Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha-verse. In it, we follow six menacing outcasts who all go on one seemingly impossible heist.

I have yet to read this book, and that fact alone is enough to make me seriously ashamed. The fact that this is a fantasy novel that follows a group of anti-heroes is enough for me to want to read this during the winter. I also have this odd feeling that the setting might have a winter vibe to it.

Spinning Silver
4.ย Spinning Silver

by: Naomi Novikย
why read this in winter:
Spinning Silverย is a fantasy novel set in the same world as Novik’s other book, Uprooted, but instead follows a different cast of characters. Like Uprooted,ย Spinning Silverย is a fairy tale retelling, but this time the story was inspired by Rumpelstiltskin. In terms of general plot, I don’t need to know much more considering I love reading anything that has to do with fairy tales during the winter season.

Beautiful Editions: Little Women

LITTLE WOMEN
Hello snowflakes!โ„๏ธ

Todayโ€™s discussion is the seventh post in my โ€œBeautiful Editionsโ€ series. In case youโ€™ve missed the previous article in which I mentioned various versions of Frankenstein, I will link itย here.

Just a recap of what to expect in my Beautiful Editions series:

I know many people who collect beautiful editions of their favorite books, myself being one of them. I think this โ€œBeautiful Editionsโ€ series will be good for those of you searching for the next beauty to add to your ever growing collection. Each post I will discuss a different book.

Today we will explore a novel that is perfect for this time of year. Although not necessarily a Christmas story, today’s pick will totally give you those cozy winter vibes. That book being–Little Women

Letโ€™s get started, shall we?

THE BOOKS

Little Women
1. Puffin Classics
Buy:ย Book Depository
Publisher:ย Puffin Classics
Format:ย Paperback
ISBN13: 9780141321080

These Puffin Classic editions are some of my personal favorites. There are many different titles in this series and the cover art is always stunning. The actual size of this edition is actually much smaller than your usual book. They also take on an almost square shape at about 5ร—6 inches. In addition to a beautiful cover, there is also a behind-the-scenes journey, including an author profile, a guide to who’s who, activities and more.

Little Women
2. Vintage Children’s Classics

Buy:ย Book Depository
Publisher:ย Vintage Publishing
Format:ย Paperback
ISBN13: 9780099572961

In my personal opinion, this edition has one of the most beautiful covers forย Little Women yet to be published. I wish I knew who did the illustration on the front because I think it was perfectly executed. I just love when book covers have that hand-drawn, sketchy look.

Inside this paperback edition, there are black and white chapter headings as well as a built in book plate for you to sign your name. Although the cover is light blue, the spine is a beautiful pale peach.

There are many other books in the Vintage Children’s Classics series. Titles range from I Capture the Castle and Black Beauty, all the way to The Railway Children and Peter Pan.ย In terms of illustrations, I don’t think there are any. Either way, this is still a stunning edition to add to any Little Women collection.

Little Women
3.ย
Alma Classics LTD
Buy:ย Book Depository
Publisher:ย Alma Books Ltd
Format:ย Paperback
ISBN13: 9781847495877

The pastel color scheme on this paperback edition is my absolute favorite. I also just adore the floral background with the profile silhouette of one of the March girls.

Although there doesn’t seem to be any full page illustrations inside this edition, there is however black and white artwork at the top of each chapter. I think the artist, Ella Bailey did an amazing job at executing this book, and I would love to see more work done by her.

4. BabyLit
Buy:ย Amazon
Publisher:ย Gibbs Smith
Format:ย Board book
ISBN13:ย 9781423643890

Gibbs Smith publishes amazing BabyLit books which are fully illustrated abridged versions of childrenโ€™s classics. The illustrations in them are always absolutely adorable, and I honestly canโ€™t recommend them enough.

Format:ย Hardcover
ISBN13: 9780393072198

Format:ย Hardcover
ISBN13: 9780141379012

These hardcover Puffin Classics are adorable. Each edition features a different repeating pattern with motifs representing different details from the story. There are unfortunately, no illustrations inside.

Another detail to keep in mind is that these hardcover versions run a bit small. There are many other childrenโ€™s classics in this collection, all in a range of bright hues. Selected stories span fromย The Secret Gardenย all the way toย Robin Hood.

Little Women
7. V&A Collectorโ€™s Edition

Buy:ย Book Depository
Publisher:ย Puffin Classics
Format:ย Hardcover
ISBN13: 9780141385587

The V&A Collectorโ€™s editions are absolutely stunning. These hardcovers were created by Puffin Classics in partnership with the Victoria and Albert Museum with exquisite cover designs from their William Morris collection.

Now, for those of you who donโ€™t know, William Morris was a famous textile designer back in the 1800s. The patterns you see in the background of each cover were originally wallpaper designs that were pulled from the museumโ€™s William Morris exhibit. I believe that there are eight books in this gorgeous series currently available. Titles range fromย Anne of Green Gablesย all the way toย Peter Pan.

Little Women
8. Penguin English Library Edition

Buy:ย Book Depository
Publisher:ย Penguin Classics

Penguin English Library is an imprint of Penguin Books, and was originally created as a sister series to the similarly designed Penguin Classics hardcover versions. Every title in this collection is a classic work of literature whether it be modern or on the more historical side. The cover art always includes a repeating design with motifs that symbolize a certain theme or scene in the said book. Not only is each individual book beautiful on it’s own, but they look great lined up together as well. Unfortunately, there are no illustrations inside.

9. Barnes and Noble Collectible Edition

Format:ย ย Paperback
ISBN13: 9780143106654

The Penguin Threads editions are some of my favorites. There are other books in this series such asย Black Beautyย andย The Secret Garden. The cover art started off as actual embroidery on fabric, which I personally think is amazing. This paperback features french flaps, deckle edges, and when you open up to the inside cover you can see what the back of the embroidery looked like. Talk about being detail oriented, am I right?

Little Women
11.ย Knickerbocker Classics
Buy:ย Book Depository
Publisher:ย Race Point Publishing
Format:ย Paperback (Flexibound)
ISBN13: 9781631060199

Race Point Publishing has two options for their Knickerbocker series. You can choose between a hardcover that comes in a slipcase, or a flexibound like the edition of Little Womenย pictured above. The flexibound versions have elastic to keep them closed, much like a moleskine journal. This is perfect if you just want to pull out your book real quick while on the go. Not to mention, the patterned covers are absolutely stunning.

Little Women
12. Penguin Classics Edition
Buy:ย Book Depository
Publisher:ย Penguin Classics
Format:ย Hardcover (Cloth bound)

ISBN13: 9781843915102

This paperback edition is absolutely divine. The cover features teal silhouette artwork of the March girls with a pop of fuchsia. Little Women
18. Collectorโ€™s Editions

Each edition is cloth-bound, with matching colored end papers and an embossed gold headline.ย Titles range fromย Black Beautyย andย Peter Pan, all the way toย Treasure Islandย and The Secret Garden. November & HoHoHo Readathon TBR

203
Hello snowflakes!โ„๏ธ

Halloween is over and it is officially November 1st as I sit here typing this. The minute the clock turned to 12:00 am, I immediately got into Christmas/winter mode. So, with that said, this month I will be participating in the HoHoHo readathon hosted by Kimberly over at The Caffeinated Reviewer. You can check out her signup post hereย if you are looking to participate.

This will be my first year participating in this readathon so bear with me here. The dates for the HoHoHo readathon take place from the 9th to the 18th of November. My main goal is to complete at least three holiday/winter books. I’m a slow reader so this is the most realistic goal for me.

I am going to have two sections in this post. The first will just be my general November TBR and the second will include the books I want to get to for the readathon.

Anyways, without further ado, letโ€™s get started!

GENERAL NOVEMBER TBR

34079578
1. The Dollmaker of Krakow
by: R.M. Romero

The Dollmaker of Krakow is a middle grade historical fiction novel that takes place during the second world war. In it, we follow a living doll named Karolina who is spirited away from the land of dolls and into the hands of a dollmaker in Krakow, Poland. Karolina is brought to life right before the dollmaker’s eyes, and before he even knows it he is smiling and laughing–something the dollmaker never does–all at the same time.

Unforunately, this newfound happiness is quickly dashed when the Nazi soldiers begin to invade Poland. Karolina and the dollmaker soon realize that their Jewish friends are in serious danger and decide they must help save them no matter what happens.

I have heard many great things about this book but the one detail that sticks out to me the most is the advice not to read this in public. Why? Because this book is heartbreaking andย willย make you cry. I’m not really one for sad books but I am excited to read this nonetheless. Plus, it had gorgeous illustrations throughout.

Little Women
2.ย Little Women
by: Louisa May Alcott

Little Women is a classic children’s book that I think most of us have heard of by now. The narrative follows four sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy during the American Civil War era. We watch as they go through their day to day lives doing things from putting on a Christmas play, all the way to forming a secret society. We also follow the sisters as they grow up and go from little girls to little women all while their father is away fighting on the war front.

I have had this puffin in bloom edition ever since I started blogging. I kept telling myself each holiday season that I would pick it up but never did due to the hefty size and length of 777 pages. I actually already started reading this and am on page 40 something. If I don’t complete it by the end of November I won’t be too worried because I know it’s long and my goal is to just finish it before 2019.

HOHOHO READATHON TBR

A Christmas Carol
1. A Christmas Carol
by: Charles Dickens

I think we all know what A Christmas Carol is about by now so I won’t trouble you with a synopsis. I got this gorgeous Wordsworth Collector’s edition in the mail a few days ago and absolutely love it. I think this will be the perfect book to pick up for the HoHoHo readathon due to the fact that it is only 144 pages in length.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
2.ย The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

by: C.S. Lewisย

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a children’s classic that follows three siblings as they stumble through a wardrobe and discover the land of Narnia. There are mythical beings, a talking lion and magic galore.

This will be my first time reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobeย or any of the Narnia books for that matter. I’ve heard that it is recommended to start with The Magician’s Nephew, but I honestly just wanted this gorgeous pocket edition, so I really don’t care.

Winter Story
3.ย Winter Story
by: Jill Barklem

Winter Storyย is the fourth and final book in the seasonal Brambley Hedge series. Each book is named after and takes place in a different season. So, it starts with Spring Story and ends with Winter Story.

In this narrative we follow the mice as they prepare for a huge snow day as well as a snow ball. When I say snow ball what I mean is the event with dancing, food and festivities–not the kind you build and throw at other individuals.

This is yet another quick read full of illustrations that I should be able to finish in one sitting, making it perfect for a readathon.

31563982
4.ย Whichwood
by: Tahereh Mafi

Whichwood is a middle grade fantasy novel and the sequel to Furthermore. In Whichwood we follow a girl named Laylee who is fated to wash the bodies of the dead and prepare them for the afterlife. She is stuck in a loneliness right after the death of her mother and is basically just going through the motions when one day two familiar faces appear and change everything.

I chose this final book for the HoHoHo readathon because I believe it takes place in a winter-y setting. The first line is even as follows, “Our story begins on a frosty nightโ€ฆ”. I honestly can’t wait to dive into this perfectly atmospheric read.

Those are all of the books I plan on reading in November!

I hope you enjoyed reading todayโ€™s post!
